Physical Education aims to promote lifelong participation in physical activity while developing both practical ability and theoretical understanding. It focuses on developing physical performance, movement skills, and knowledge of how the body works during activity.
Dance focuses on developing technical dance skills, choreography, and performance quality across different dance styles.
Sports Leaders develops skills in leadership, organisation, and communication through planning and delivering physical activities and sports sessions.
Food and Consumer Technology develops practical food preparation skills alongside knowledge of nutrition, health, and consumer issues. It prepares learners for independent living and further study in food, hospitality, and health-related areas.
Performance (50% of overall grade): An externally assessed practical performance in two different physical activities. Pupils demonstrate a range of skills, techniques, decision-making and overall effectiveness within a performance context.
Portfolio: Factors Impacting Performance (50% of overall grade): An externally assessed written portfolio analysing personal performance. Pupils identify strengths and areas for development, select a factor impacting performance, and plan, carry out and evaluate a training programme to improve performance.
Performance (50% of overall grade): An externally assessed practical performance in one physical activity. Pupils demonstrate a high level of skill execution, decision-making, consistency and overall effectiveness in a performance context.
Portfolio: Performance Analysis and Development (50% of overall grade): An externally assessed written portfolio analysing personal performance. Pupils evaluate strengths and weaknesses, select factors impacting performance, and plan, implement and evaluate a performance development programme.
Performance (40% of overall grade): An externally assessed practical performance in one physical activity. Pupils demonstrate advanced technical ability, tactical awareness, consistency and control within a competitive performance environment.
Project–Dissertation (60% of overall grade): An externally assessed in-depth written investigation. Pupils research and critically analyse factors impacting performance, applying theoretical knowledge to performance contexts and evaluating methods used to improve performance.
Assignment (50% of overall grade): An externally assessed practical assignment. Pupils investigate a food-related issue, plan and prepare a three-course meal, and evaluate how well it meets nutritional, practical and consumer needs.
Question Paper (50% of overall grade): An external exam assessing knowledge and understanding of food, health and nutrition, food product development, and contemporary food issues affecting consumers.
Assignment (30% of overall grade): An externally assessed practical assignment. Pupils research a complex food-related issue, plan and produce a range of dishes, and evaluate how effectively they meet identified needs.
Question Paper (70% of overall grade): An external exam assessing in-depth knowledge of nutrition, food science, food production, sustainability, and consumer influences on food choice.
Performance of Leadership Activities (60% of overall grade): An internally assessed and externally verified component where pupils plan, lead and evaluate sports sessions or activities. Students must demonstrate a range of leadership skills in real or simulated settings, such as organising groups, instructing participants, managing safety and adapting activities to meet participant needs.
Written/Practical Portfolio (40% of overall grade): A portfolio of evidence that supports the leadership activities. This includes:
Planning documentation (session plans, risk assessments, aims & objectives)
Evaluation and reflection on leadership performance
Evidence of personal development (identifying strengths and areas for improvement)
The portfolio shows understanding of leadership theory, communication skills, analysis of outcomes and how leadership impacted participants.
Performance of Leadership Activities (60% of overall grade): An internally assessed and externally verified component where pupils plan, lead and evaluate a range of sports leadership activities. Learners demonstrate effective communication, organisation, safety management and the ability to adapt activities to suit participants.
Portfolio (40% of overall grade): A portfolio of written and practical evidence supporting the leadership performance. This includes:
Detailed planning and risk assessments
Evaluation of leadership effectiveness
Reflection on strengths, development needs and impact on participants
The portfolio demonstrates understanding of leadership styles, decision-making and personal development.
Performance (60% of overall grade): An externally assessed practical performance where pupils perform two contrasting dances at a higher technical and expressive level. Learners demonstrate control, precision, stylistic awareness and confident performance skills.
Question Paper (40% of overall grade): An external written exam assessing in-depth understanding of dance technique, choreography, performance analysis and safe practice.
Graded Unit Project (External; final grade A–D): A major practical and written project that integrates performance, rehearsal and reflective practice. Learners plan, rehearse and present dance work, demonstrating professional standards of technique, artistry and performance.
Unit Assessments (Internally assessed; Pass/Fail): A range of practical and written assessments across specialist units, which may include:

Assessment evidence may include live performance, rehearsal logs, written evaluations, video evidence and reflective journals.
